(Alliance News) - Burberry Group PLC on Wednesday said it has hired Daniel Lee, the former creative director of Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta, to be its new design chief, as Riccardo Tisci steps down.

The London-based fashion retailer said Tisci will leave at the end of this month after almost five years in the post as chief creative officer.

Burberry hailed Tisci for improving the brand's fortunes, including offering it much-needed relevance with younger shoppers.

Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Akeroyd said: "Riccardo has played a pivotal role in repositioning Burberry. He has enhanced our creative language, modernised and elevated our product offer and brought a new generation of luxury customers to our brand."

Akeroyd himself joined Burberry only in April, coming from Italian fashion house Gianni Versace SpA and replacing Marco Gobbetti.

The company said Lee was creative director at Bottega Veneta from 2018 to 2021. He also was the director of ready-to-wear design French firm Celine and worked at luxury fashion house Balenciaga.

Lee's debut runway collection for Burberry will be presented at London Fashion Week in February 2023.

The announcement came after Burberry on Monday said Chief Operating & Financial Officer Julie Brown will leave at the close of its current financial year on April 1 next year to join pharmaceutical firm GSK PLC.

Shares were up 3.3% at 1,740.63 pence each on Wednesday morning in London.
