(Alliance News) - Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca PLC on Friday said its coronavirus vaccine was safe, after some countries suspended its use in response to concerns about a potential link to blood clots.
"An analysis of our safety data of more than 10 million records has shown no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis in any defined age group, gender, batch or in any particular country" from the jab, a company spokesperson said.
"In fact, the observed number of these types of events are significantly lower in those vaccinated than would be expected among the general population."
Earlier Friday, the World Health Organization said there was no reason to stop using AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine after several European countries suspended the roll-out over blood clot fears.
The WHO said its vaccines advisory committee was currently looking at safety data and stressed that no causal link had been established between the vaccine and clotting.
"AstraZeneca is an excellent vaccine, as are the other vaccines that are being used," WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters at a briefing in Geneva.
"We've reviewed the data on deaths. There has been no death, to date, proven to have be caused by vaccination," she said.
Shares in AstraZeneca were down 1.3% at 6,921.00 pence on Friday afternoon in London.
