Ryanair and Wizz Air report big drops in passenger traffic in February

(Alliance News) - Budget airlines Ryanair Holdings PLC and Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Tuesday reported massive drops in the number of passengers carried in February, as travel restrictions in the UK and Europe kept planes on the tarmac.

Ryanair carried 500,000 passengers in February, down 95% from 10.5 million a year before. Its rolling 12-month total was 32.7 million, down 79% from 153.8 million a year previous.

The Dublin-based carrier said it ran just 6% of its normal February schedule with a 78% load factor. Its rolling 12-month load factor was 74%.

Wizz Air carried 382,928 passengers last month, down 83% from 3.0 million a year before. Its 12-month rolling total was 11.5 million, down 72% from 41.0 million.

Budapest-based, central and eastern Europe-focused Wizz Air in February flew 17% of the capacity it had a year before, with a 70% load factor, down from 94% in February 2020.

Ryanair shares were down 3.1% at EUR16.41 in London on Tuesday morning. Wizz Air was down 0.4% at 5,365.00 pence.
