Total net sales of £2.9bn were up by 38% on March - when the peak month for sales was hit by stockmarket turmoil - and 91% on April 2000.

But the aggregate figures disguised a wide divergence between private investors and big institutions. Net retail sales were £1.96bn in April 2001 compared to £2.46bn in April 2000.

In contrast, institutions such as insurance funds and pension funds became more upbeat about unit trusts over the same period. Net institutional sales of £920m in April 2001 compared to a net outflow of £949m in April 2000.

The UK All Companies sector was by far the most popular among Individual Savings Account investors last month with net sales of £494m. This was followed by the Balanced Managed sector (£137m), Europe excluding the UK (£136m) and UK Other Bond (£135m).
