More than 400 workers from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will go on strike for 18 days in May and June.

The Public & Commercial Services Union on Wednesday said 432 of its members working as customer service advisers in Glasgow and Newcastle-upon-Tyne will walk out on May 10 to May 12, May 15 to May 19, May 22 to May 26, May 29 to May 31, and June 1 to June 2.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Our hard-working members in HMRC are fed up with being treated with disdain by a government that doesn't seem to care about its own staff.

"If they did, ministers would be able to stop this strike action tomorrow by making a fair offer to help our members through the cost-of-living crisis and beyond."

The news comes as the government attempts its latest action against striking public sector workers. Two days ago health secretary Steve Barclay said the Department For Health & Social Care would take action through the courts to prevent members of the Royal College of Nursing from striking.

Fresh figures from the taxman this week revealed the government had raked in a record £7 billion from inheritance tax receipts alone. It also revealed hundreds and thousands of pensioners had been overtaxed and were due rebates.
