(Alliance News) - Frontier IP Group PLC on Friday noted a jump in its share price, after one of its investees secured EU grant funding.

London-based Frontier IP focuses on commercialising intellectual property. Its shares rose 32% to 14.50 pence on Friday morning in London.

The company said it had been made aware that the European Commission had approved EUR211 million in grant funding from the Italian government for CamGraPhIC Ltd, a Pisa, Italy-based business. The funds are "to support the development of photonic optical transceivers based on graphene", Frontier IP explained.

The EC noted in a statement published Thursday: "Optical transceivers are devices used to send and receive data through light instead of electrons in chips. These chips can be used in different sectors, including automotive, telecommunication, aerospace and defence. Replacement of the traditionally used silicon with graphene is expected to significantly improve the devices' performance and efficiency."

CamGraPhIC'S project will be carried out in Pisa and Bergamo, the EC added, and "will involve collaborations with both universities and research and technology organisations".

CamGraPhIC is a wholly owned subsidiary of 2D Photonics Spa, a Frontier IP investee with offices in Italy and the UK.
