(Alliance News) - Germany and the UK are pushing ahead with plans for a direct rail link.

German Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and his British counterpart Heidi Alexander signed a declaration in Hamburg on Wednesday stating that a task force will be set up to clarify outstanding issues.

"We are committed to ensuring that the first trains can roll directly from Germany to the UK under the English Channel in the coming years," said Schneider.

However, questions relating to border and security checks must first be clarified together with infrastructure operators and rail companies, he added.

"A direct connection would make travel much easier and significantly increase the attractiveness of train travel," said Schneider.

Alexander spoke of a groundbreaking declaration that has the potential to create a convenient alternative to flying.

She added that the task force should bring the two countries closer together and open up new opportunities for tourism, the economy and cultural exchange.
