(Alliance News) - Anglo-German holiday operator Tui AG on Tuesday said revenue rose in the three months to the end of December amid a relaxation of travel restrictions, but bookings for the current quarter were hurt by the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Tui said it currently has 6.0 million bookings across the Winter 2021-22 and Summer 2022 holiday seasons, with an acceleration in bookings since the start of 2022, as confidence in international travel improves.

Winter 2021-22 bookings stand at just 58% of Winter 2018-19 levels, meaning pre-pandemic, and Tui said it expects winter capacity to come in at the bottom of its guided range of 60% to 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

More positively, Summer 2022 bookings are 72% of Summer 2019 levels, with recent bookings showing the same pattern as in January 2019, Tui said. In the UK, the removal of testing requirements gave a boost to bookings, and Summer 2022 bookings currently are 19% ahead of Summer 2019, the Hannover, Germany-based company said.

Revenue in the three months that ended December 31, Tui's financial first quarter, totalled EUR2.37 billion, well up on EUR468.1 million a year before. Loss before interest and tax was EUR271.4 million, narrowed from EUR698.1 million. On an underlying basis, the Ebit loss was EUR273.6 million, narrowed from EUR675.8 million in financial 2021.

Best performing, Tui's Hotels & Resorts segment recorded a second sequential profitable quarter, with an underlying Ebit profit of EUR61.1 million, swung from a EUR95.6 million loss a year before.

Capacity during the quarter was 67% of 2019 levels, as expected. Tui served 2.3 million customers during the three months, up by 1.7 million from a year before, with a load factor of 79%, up from 70%.

Net debt at the end of the quarter was EUR5.1 billion, unchanged from a year before. Tui said it will take the first step to hand back government funding that it received during the virus crisis. It plans to pay back about EUR700 million come April 1.
