(Alliance News) - BP PLC and Daimler Truck AG are to partner on the development of hydrogen infrastructure and the introduction of hydrogen-powered trucks in the UK, the two companies announced Wednesday.

The agreement will see the two firms aim to introduce a hydrogen network, supporting the roll-out of technology for the decarbonisation of UK freight transport.

Under the partnership, BP will assess the feasibility of designing, constructing, operating and supplying a network of up to 25 hydrogen refuelling stations across the UK by 2030. The stations would be supplied by BP with "green hydrogen" – generated from water using renewable power, the company claimed.

Daimler Truck would then deliver hydrogen-powered fuel-cell trucks to its UK customers from 2025, the German auto giant said.

"Hydrogen is critical to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors – and for heavy and long-distance freight it is sometimes the only answer," commented Emma Delaney, BP executive vice president for customer and products.

"Working with a leading manufacturer like Daimler Truck we can accelerate the deployment of both vehicles and infrastructure and pioneer the use of hydrogen to fuel the next generation of [UK] freight."

Shares in BP were 1.1% lower in London on Wednesday at 355.15 pence each. Daimler shares were down 0.7% at EUR82.65 in Frankfurt.
