(Alliance News) - Ryanair Holdings PLC on Wednesday trimmed its annual loss estimate but warned traffic in its current financial year will be at the lower end of the carrier's guidance range.

For the year ended March 31, financial 2021, Ryanair expects to post a net loss, before exceptional items, between EUR800 million and EUR850 million. The airline company's previous forecast was for a loss between EUR850 million and EUR950 million.

Despite the forecast being slightly improved, it is still a wild swing from the EUR1.00 billion of pre-exceptional, post-tax profit Ryanair made in financial 2020.

What's more, the company cautioned on traffic for financial 2022.

"FY22 traffic is likely to be towards the lower end of our previously guided range of 80 million to 120 million passengers," the company warned.

Ryanair said it was hurt by Easter travel curbs and the EU's slow Covid-19 vaccine rollout. And on earnings for the current financial year, the company was also slightly pessimistic.

"While it is not possible (at this time) to provide meaningful FY22 profit guidance, we do not share the recent optimism of certain analysts as we believe that the outcome for FY22 is currently close to breakeven," Ryaniar explained.

Ryanair reports on its financial 2021 results on May 17.

On Tuesday, Ryanair reported a slump in passenger numbers for March. It saw just 500,000 passengers in March, down 91% from 5.5 million a year ago. The firm said it operated just 5% of its normal March schedule with a 77% load factor.

Shares were down 1.0% at EUR16.64 early Wednesday in London.
