(Alliance News) - Hipgnosis Songs Fund Ltd on Wednesday announced it has acquired 50% of the song catalogue of American-Canadian singer and songwriter Neil Young.

The British Guernsey-registered music royalty investment company said it has purchased half of Young's worldwide copyright and income interests in his song catalogue, which is comprised of 1,180 songs.

Young began his music career in the 1960s, and has released almost 50 studio albums and more than 20 live albums, of which 18 are certified gold, seven are platinum and three are multi-platinum.

Founder Merck Mercuriadis said: "I built Hipgnosis to be a company Neil would want to be a part of. We have a common integrity, ethos and passion born out of a belief in music and these important songs. This is a deal that changes Hipgnosis forever."

Shares in Hipgnosis were up 0.4% at 123.50 pence in London on Wednesday.
