(Alliance News) - Annual inflation in Ireland accelerated in December and for 2021 as a whole, figures from the Central Statistics Office showed on Wednesday.

On an annual basis, the consumer price index rose 5.5% in December, compared to a 5.3% rise in November. Meanwhile, the harmonised index of consumer prices - calculated for euro area-wide comparison - rose 5.7%.

Month-on-month, consumer prices rose 0.5%, marking a slowdown from 0.6% in November.

For 2021, the annual average rate of inflation was 2.4%, compared to a 0.3% fall in 2020 and a 0.9% increase in 2019.
