(Alliance News) - Vodafone Group PLC will power the entirety of its European operations from July 1 using electricity from renewable sources, it said on Wednesday.

The telecommunications firm aims to power 100% of its European network including mobile and fixed networks, data centres and offices.

Vodafone sees the move as a step towards its goal of reducing its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030 and across the company's entire value chain by 2040.

During the last year the company has invested EUR65 million in energy efficiency and on-site renewable projects, leading to annual energy savings of 135 gigawatt hours.

"This is a major milestone towards our goal of reducing our own global carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, helping our customers reduce their own environmental footprint and continuing to build an inclusive and sustainable digital society in all of our markets," said Chief Executive Nick Read said.

Vodafone reported that its energy use has remained flat during the last year due to increased use of more energy efficient technology, despite a 47% year-on-year increase in mobile data traffic.

Vodafone shares were 1.0% higher in Wednesday early morning trading in London at 131.56 pence each.
