(Alliance News) - The administration of US President Joe Biden is mulling cutting the amount of nicotine allowed in cigarettes, the Wall Street Journal reported late Monday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the WSJ reported that the cut would leave the amount of nicotine in cigarettes at levels which are no longer addictive.

The measure could be paired with a move to ban menthol cigarettes, the WSJ added, noting that health watchdog US Food & Drug Administration has until April 29 to decide on whether or not to ban menthols.

Less addictive cigarettes would mean smokers may find it easier to transition to nicotine patches, e-cigarettes or quit smoking altogether.

Tobacco stocks tumbled in the wake of the news.

In London on Tuesday morning, Dunhill and Pall Mall owner British American Tobacco PLC fell 5.5%, while Imperial Brands PLC, which owns the Davidoff and Embassy brands, lost 5.1%.

Philip Morris International Inc and Altria Group Inc fell 1.3% and 6.2% in New York on Monday.
