(Alliance News) - Telecommunications services provider Airtel Africa PLC on Wednesday noted the directive issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission on Tuesday on its new SIM registration rules.

Under the new rules, operators now require all their subscribers to provide a valid National Identification Number to update SIM registration records, and is to take place between Wednesday and December 30.

After the deadline, all SIMs without National Identification Numbers are to be blocked from the networks. Meanwhile, violations of the directive by the operator can lead to sanctions, including the possible withdrawal of the operating licence.

Airtel said its Nigerian business is working to comply with the directive.

Shares in Airtel Africa were up 3.6% at 76.28 pence on Wednesday in London.
