(Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC on Thursday declared a maiden ore reserve and an updated mineral resource at the Jadar lithium-borates project in Serbia.

The London-based metals and mining company said the ore reserve is 16.6 million tonnes at 1.81% lithium oxide and 13.4% boron oxide. The mineral resource comprises 55.2 million tonnes of indicated resource at 1.68% lithium oxide and 17.9% boron oxide, with an additional 84.1 million tonnes of inferred resource at 1.84% lithium oxide and 12.6% boron oxide.

Rio Tinto said the maiden ore reserve "represents a significant investment for Serbia with both direct and indirect economic benefits, and would become the country's second largest exporter."

Pre-feasibility studies undertaken by Rio Tinto have shown that the Jadar project has the potential to produce both battery grade lithium carbonate and boric acid.

At the end of July, the project began a feasibility study of the underground mine, industrial processing and waste facilities, with an investment of almost AUD200 million, or GBP112.4 million. The study is expected to be completed at the end of 2021 and if approved, construction could take up to four years.

Shares in Rio Tinto were up 0.7% at 5,408.00 pence in London on Thursday.
