(Alliance News) - United Utilities Group PLC on Wednesday said profit in the first half rose despite a fall in revenue due to average customer bills being reduced.

The Warrington, England-based water company posted a pretax profit in the six months to September 30 of GBP201.1 million, increasing by 3.1% from GBP195.1 million a year before. Finance expenses fell 32% to GBP132.0 million from GBP193.9 million a year ago.

Revenue declined by 4.3% to GBP894.4 million from GBP935.5 million a year prior. The company said this largely reflected a reduction in its average customer bill.

Chief Executive Steve Mogford said: "Average customer bills have reduced by 7% in real terms this year but we recognise that for many in our region, these are still challenging times. For those struggling to pay their bills, we offer the sector's widest range of financial assistance schemes. We have also acted swiftly to increase the number of customers eligible for reduced tariffs."

"The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and related lockdown periods have seen non-household revenues decrease by around GBP40 million, with an increase in household revenue of around GBP26 million as a result of more time spent at home and the hot, dry weather towards the end of spring," United Utilities added.

United Utilities upped its interim dividend by 1.5% to 14.41 pence per share from 14.20 pence per share the prior year.

Going forward, the company expects its revenue for the year ending March 2021 to be between GBP1.75 billion and BGP1.80 billion.

"We now have a clearer understanding of the impact of Covid-19 on our business which remains robust and supported by a strong balance sheet," Mogford added.

United Utilities shares were up 3.3%, making it one of the best FTSE 100 performers on Wednesday morning, at 925.80 pence each in London.
