(Alliance News) - Euronext NV is considering making an offer to buy Borsa Italiana SpA from London Stock Exchange Group PLC, Italian newspaper Milano Finanza reported Wednesday.

After its planned acquisition of Refinitiv, a global provider of financial market data, LSE may be less interested in the Milan-based stock exchange and therefore could sell it, MF said citing unnamed sources. This is despite the fact that last week LSEG Chief Executive David Schwimmer went to Rome to reassure Italian securities regulator Consob and the Italian Ministry of the Economy on future plans for Borsa Italiana.

Euronext is evaluating the idea of acquiring Borsa Italiana as a block, therefore not only Piazza Affari, but also MTS, the platform of government bond trading, post-trading services, and the Elite project dedicated to promoting small and medium-sized companies.

Euronext is listed in Amsterdam and owns the stock exchanges in Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Lisbon, Dublin, and most recently Oslo.

It is mulling the price it would offer to LSE for Borsa Italiana, according to the newspaper's sources. They added that Euronext's purpose is both strategic and industrial: it aims to create a true European confederation of stock exchanges, guided by common standards, where all companies can gain access to increase their visibility, while attracting interest from potential international investors.

In London, shares in London Stock Exchange Group were down by 0.7% at 6,996.00 pence each.
