(Alliance News) - Irish retail sales grew strongly both on an annual and monthly basis in September, data from the Central Statistics Office showed on Tuesday.

The volume of retail sales was up 4.3% in September compared to August on a seasonally-adjusted basis, and up 4.2% annually.

The sectors with the largest month-on month-volume increases were hardware, paints & glass, up 8.8%, and motor trades, up 8.4%. Meanwhile, department stores recorded a 2.2% fall and clothing, footwear & textiles sales were down 2.2%.

The value of sales was up 3.8% month-on-month and 2.8% higher year-on-year.
