LONDON (Alliance News) - AIB Group PLC on Friday said it proposed the appointment of Divisional Managing Director Colin Hunt as chief executive officer.

The Irish commercial bank said it has started the required regulatory fitness and probity assessment process and consultation with the Minister for Finance in Ireland in respect of the proposed appointment.

Subject to the satisfactory conclusion of the aforementioned processes, Hunt will succeed Bernard Byrne, who will step down early next year.

Hunt joined AIB in 2016 as managing director for Wholesale & Institutional Banking.

"I am delighted to announce that the board has identified Colin Hunt as the successful candidate for the role of our new chief executive officer," said Chairman Richard Pym.

"We had a number of excellent candidates to choose from and we are delighted that the next proposed leader of AIB has emerged from within our own ranks," added Pym.

AIB shares closed 1.3% lower on Friday at EUR3.58 each.
