LONDON (Alliance News) - Imperial Brands PLC on Friday said US Food & Drug Administration's proposals regarding menthol cigarettes and flavoured cigars would need to be supported by the relevant science and other evidence.

The company behind Davidoff and Camel cigarette brands added that it will fully engage with FDA over its proposals, which is likely to be a multi-year process.

Shares in Imperial Brands opened 1.1% higher at 2,631.50 pence each on Friday.

The US regulator has decided to restrict sales of most flavored e-cigarettes to age-restricted stores and pursue bans on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars in an effort to control a surge in teen e-cigarette use .

Imperial Brands welcomed FDA's move to prevent youth access to tobacco and vapour products. The FTSE 100-listed tobacco company said it is actively working against youth access and usage of its products and uses a technology on blu.com for effective age verification for all online sales of vapour products.

The company said it is additionally developing a connected version of myblu vapour product with child protection features, including device locking technology.
