LONDON (Alliance News) - Leigh Day confirmed it is bringing equal pay claims against all big four UK supermarket chains, after launching action against WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC.

The law firm said it it "seeking compensation for women in stores who believe they are paid less than men".

After contacting Morrisons on behalf of their first clients, Leigh Day said it is taking legal action on behalf of 30,000 staff working in Walmart Inc-owned Asda, J Sainsbury PLC and Tesco PLC stores.

"We believe that Morrisons, as with the other major supermarkets, has underpaid those working in its stores for a number of years. The big four supermarkets in the UK make vast amounts each year in profits – it is time that they faced up to their legal obligations under Equal Pay legislation," Emma Satyamurti, partner at Leigh Day, said.

According to the law firm, Morrisons' claims are worth over GBP1 billion as around 80,000 staff members are eligible to claim for equal pay.

Leigh Day said it has asked Morrisons to "confirm if they have carried out an equal pay audit", something the Equality & Human Rights Commission suggested as the most effective way of ensuring an organisation meets its equal pay obligations.
