European equity investor Tim Stevenson is retiring from fund management

European equity investor Tim Stevenson is retiring from fund management after 35 years managing money. Stevenson has spent most of his investment career focused on European equities at Janus Henderson, making him one of the most experienced investors in the sector. He has announced plans to leave Janus Henderson next year.

He currently runs the Silver Rated Henderson Euro Trust (HNE) and Bronze Rated Horizon Pan European Equity fund, where he has delivered impressive returns for investors throughout his tenure.

Stevenson has managed the EuroTrust since it was launched in 1992 and manages the European sleeves of the Henderson International Opportunities, Bankers, and Law Debenture investment trusts. He has managed the Horizon Pan European fund since its inception in 2001, applying the same investment philosophy and approach that he has used since the early 1990s, focusing on investing in quality growth companies, in particular those whose earnings are not dependent on any phase within the economic cycle, over the long term.

“Stevenson has proved an astute stock-picker over the years and has shown skill in constructing a well-balanced portfolio,” says Morningstar analyst Peter Brunt. “As a result, Stevenson has been able to create an outstanding long-term performance record.”

Janus Henderson has confirmed that “Tim will remain with the team on a transitional basis through the first quarter of 2019 during which time he will continue to offer his counsel and advice to his co-manager, James Ross”. The asset manager stressed that the team-based approach to management will mean the funds will be managed in exactly the same way following Stevenson’s departure.

Alex Crooke, Co-Head of Equities at Janus Henderson said: “Tim has built an impressive track record over the last thirty two years. It has been a delight and pleasure to work with him all of this time. We wish him well with his retirement.”

Morningstar analysts have placed Stevenson’s funds Under Review.

"Ross has been at Janus Henderson for all of his career, but his portfolio management experience was primarily in UK equities, co-managing Janus Henderson UK Alpha alongside Neil Hermon from 2009, prior to joining Tim Stevenson on the European equities team in 2016," explains Brunt.

"While Ross had been working informally with Stevenson for a number of years prior to joining him, he was focused primarily on UK all-caps. While Stevenson has been supporting Ross’ development since his arrival and the two have been working collaboratively, Stevenson has remained the lead manager on both strategies.

"Janus Henderson Horizon Pan European and Eurotrust Ord will go Under Review until we have spoken with the team to better understand the planned set up upon Stevenson’s retirement."
