1. Templeton Global Total Return

Templeton Global Total Return is  Bronze rated, and Morningstar analyst Anthony McDonald calls it "an attractive choice for investors seeking an unconstrained, strategically managed global bond fund".

He continued: "Manager Michael Hasenstab is experienced and has been the lead manager of the fund since 2006 and has the support of comanager Sonal Desai. His expertise in macroeconomic analysis underpins this offering. He is supported by a well-resourced team, incorporating local expertise in key markets, which we believe provides him with the resources he needs to run this fund."

2. Aberdeen Emerging Markets

Aberdeen Emerging Markets is rated  Gold by Morningstar analysts, with Karine Glauser describing it as a "strong choice" for investors looking for exposure to the sector.

"The fund benefits from a very robust process and a well-resourced team, headed by Devan Kaloo and Hugh Young," she said. "The global emerging-markets team comprises over 35 members with extensive experience in the region. We particularly like the stability of the team and the low level of turnover, with senior managers having been with Aberdeen for more than 10 years."

3. First State Global Emerging Markets Leaders

The Global Emerging Markets Leaders fund from First State is ranked  Gold by Morningstar and is so popular that the fund has been soft-closed to new investors. Those who already own the fund can add to their holding however.

Analyst Amaya Assan said that the Leaders fund was one of the very best of its kind.

"We view the quality of the fund’s management team as one of the most experienced and capable there is," she said.

4. Invesco Perpetual High Income

Neil Woodford's high yielding fund Invesco Perpetual High Income is a mainstay in many an investor's portfolio. Ranked  Gold by Morningstar analysts, Ruli Vilijoen said that High Income continues to reward invesors.

Vilijoen said: "Neil Woodford has been at the helm since 1988. Such a long tenure is seldom seen in the fund industry. He works in a collegial environment and is supported by the other managers on Invesco’s UK equity desk and within the wider equity group.

5. Cazenove UK Smaller Companies

Despite being bought by Schroders earlier this year, Cazenove funds will continue to invest as seperate entities. This  Bronze rated fund, UK Smaller Companies has an experienced manager Paul Marriage at the helm.

Analyst Simon Molica said that Marriage has delivered robust returns over time and has demonstrated an ability to perform through various market cycles.
