Notes

Since our last monthly update on the FTSE’s highest dividend yields, income investors have been dealt two significant blows in the form of Shell’s 66% dividend cut and BT’s year-long suspension of its payout.

The two companies have been consistently in our top 10 over the past year and typically account for around £10 billion of dividend income. But a significant number of stocks prized by income investors have announced changes to their dividend policy since the coronavirus crisis struck, and more could follow in the coming weeks and months. As John Moore, senior investment manager at Brewin Dolphin, notes: “In the immediate term, for those seeking income there are no easy answers”.
