Two exceptional fund managers and an outstanding fund house were celebrated last night at the prestigious Morningstar OBSR Awards. M&G’s Stuart Rhodes was heralded as the Outstanding Rising Talent of 2013 and AXA Framlington’s Nigel Thomas was crowned Outstanding Fund Manager of 2013. Invesco Perpetual claimed the Outstanding Investment House Award.

Outstanding Fund Manager Award

Nigel Thomas (AXA Framlington UK Select Opportunities)

Nigel Thomas has managed the AXA Framlington UK Select Opportunities fund since 2002, one of the longest manager tenures in the sector. Loyalty to investors is an important factor in the Outstanding Fund Manager award. Thomas has demonstrated an ability to provide strong investor returns through multiple market cycles with a well thought-out and disciplined process.

Delivering the award to Mr Thomas at a ceremony held at the Dorchester in London last night, Morningstar OBSR analyst Richard Whitehall said: “We rate Thomas highly among his peers and he has continued to deliver time and time again and therefore consider him to be a very worth winner of our award.”

The investment process utilised in the UK Select Opportunities fund, which is rated Gold by Morningstar OBSR, is largely a bottom-up stock-picking approach that draws upon Thomas’s considerable experience.

“He manages the fund with considerable investment freedom to construct the portfolio according to his thematic, sector and stock preferences,” Whitehall added.

The fund has achieved trailing returns of 15% per annum over the past three years, on an annualised basis.

Outstanding Rising Talent Award

Stuart Rhodes (M&G Global Dividend)

Stuart Rhodes has been part of M&G’s global equity team since 2005 and has risen to become a key fund manager at one of the largest fund houses in the UK. Rhodes has managed M&G’s Global Dividend fund since its launch in 2008 and is now responsible for one of the biggest global dividend funds in the world, which is rated Silver by Morningstar OBSR.

With assets totalling more than £7 billion, Morningstar OBSR analysts think the popularity of the fund is justified as Rhodes has created a process that is scalable, focusing as it does on large-cap, liquid companies with long histories of paying growing dividends.

On handing over the award, Whitehall praised the fund’s “consistency of returns across different market cycles, some of which have been unfavourable to the dividend style of investing,” and added that this is “testament to Rhodes’ quality as a manager, making him a worthy winner of the rising talent award.”

M&G Global Dividend has returned 10.7% per annum over the past three years, on an annualised basis, and has surpassed the yield of the MSCI All Countries World index since launch. The fund currently offers a 12-month yield of 3.48%, according to Morningstar data.

Outstanding Investment House Award

Invesco Perpetual

Morningstar OBSR analysts voted for Invesco Perpetual as Outstanding Investment House for the second time.

“We are impressed with the depth and breadth of funds and asset classes covered at the investment house,” said Whitehall. “This depth is backed up by a high quality line-up of fund managers, as demonstrated by the sheer volume of Morningstar OBSR positive ratings.” No fewer than 15 Invesco Perpetual funds currently carry analyst ratings of Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Whitehall went on to list several reasons for celebrating Invesco Perpetual: “The company is able to retain staff well, the average manager tenure impresses and we think highly of the strong investment ethic that is shared by their fund managers.”

One particular aspect of the firm that Whitehall focused on—and a key element of Morningstar OBSR’s qualitative fund ratings process—was the remuneration structure, whereby Invesco Perpetual successfully aligns fund managers’ and investors’ interests.
