Day 17: Using Target-Date Funds for Cheap Asset-Allocation Advice
Degree of difficulty: Easy

Look at the asset allocation of target-date funds geared toward your retirement date to understand basic, sensible asset allocation strategies. Examining how target-date funds operate could help you glean some useful takeaways: not only do equity allocations invariably step down as the investor gets closer to the target date, but so do allocations to riskier investment types such as junk bonds and emerging-markets stocks.

To look at target-date funds for investors with a target date between 2012 to 2014, look at this selection of funds in the “Target Date 2000-2014” Morningstar category. For a target date from 2015 onwards, look at this selection of funds in the “Target Date 2015+” Morningstar category.

Target-date funds have been around since 2000 in the UK and you can currently find data for dozens of target-date funds on our Fund Quickrank (simply search by target-date category).
