SEOUL (Alliance News) - North Korea's leadership views war with the US as inevitable, a spokesman for the country's foreign ministry said.

"The only question now is when the war will break out," said the spokesman, as cited in the country's state news agency KCNA late Wednesday. The spokesman also blamed the US' "nuclear war manoeuvres" for making war on the Korean peninsula unavoidable.

Pyongyang regularly accuses the US of preparing an attack on the country through its military drills with South Korea, a claim both the US and South Korea reject.

On Monday, US and South Korean forces began their annual Vigilant Ace Military manoeuvres. With more than 230 fighter jets, including US F-35 stealth fighters, and about 12,000 troops involved, this year's military exercises, which will continue until Friday, will be the largest ever.

As part of the military exercise, the US has also sent two long-range B-1B bombers to South Korea from its air base in Guam, the South Korean military's chief of staff said Tuesday.
