Holly Cook: Well we've started the year with what feels like an oil crisis, a rouble crisis and potentially even a eurozone crisis but sentiment amongst men and women on the street is the that UK economy is not doing too badly.

Woman #1: I think people are still worried about money in the UK, but on the whole I think there are signs of recovery and I’m hoping that will continue and that we’re no longer in a depressed state.

Man #1: I will say I’ve never seen an economy as hot as London’s is right now. Even 1980s Japan can’t compare. There are literally cranes everywhere I look, brand new buildings, a lot of money flowing into this place.

Woman #2: My idea is a bit controversial; I think the actually I actually fine; I think we’re all being led a bit of a lie.

Man #2: At this time, the UK economy is quite good.

Woman #3: I’ve no idea because I think the election is going to make everybody quite nervous and I don’t think anything serious is going to get decided for several months anyway, and then who knows – who knows what could happen.

Man #1: You know, it’s kind of like a double-edged sword. There’s so much money flowing into the economy here, in the general sense it’s great for the economy. But I kind of get the impression that average folks are getting priced out of the market, no longer being able to get mortgages for homes, and the home prices are getting jacked up really high because – I hate to say it – but because a lot of foreign investors are coming in and buying stuff, and I don’t want to contribute to that.

Man #3: Prices are going up, yes, but I feel for the younger generation because it’s just very difficult for them.

Woman #1: Well I’m self-employed actually, so people are spending less money which means that my business is not doing as well as when I first started it. But I’m working hard and I think that as the shoots of recovery continue that hopefully more people will buy my services.

Holly Cook: So sentiment about the UK economy is still fairly confident, but of course concerns around rising prices and property prices in particular. We’ll be checking in with the consumer later in the year to see how these issues are panning out.
