Small-cap stocks continue to outperform their larger peers - and all other asset classes. According to F&C Investments’ FundWatch survey, the UK Smaller Companies sector was the only one of the 36 Investment Management Association sectors to achieve double digit returns in the three months to the end of September, gaining 11.93%.

F&C says that positive economic data from the Bank of England and the International Monetary Fund boosted the performance of riskier assets, helping UK small-cap funds make great gains.

Rob Burdett, co-manager of multi-manager at F&C Investments, said that domestically focused smaller companies benefitted from positive economic numbers from the UK, Europe and Japan.

He revealed that Gervais Williams’ CF Miton UK Smaller Companies fund was the top performing fund for the quarter. The fund is not rated by Morningstar analysts as it is only a year old - but here are three top-rated small-cap funds which are.

Aberforth UK Small Companies

Despite recent underperformance, we have confidence in the  Gold-rated Aberforth Smaller Companies fund, says analyst Ruli Viljoen.

While the very long-term record here is strong, in recent years the fund has failed to keep up with either its Morningstar UK Small-Cap Equity category average or its Numis Smaller Companies benchmark. That’s been a function of growth being more in vogue than value, and specifically large-cap growth stocks, combined with the fact that investors have been shunning risk. In times of such polarised leadership in the markets, as we’ve had throughout the last few years, it’s no surprise this fund has struggled to gain ground. But we don’t think that means the process is broken.

Old Mutual UK Smaller Companies

We consider Old Mutual UK Smaller Companies to be a strong offering within the competitive small-cap category, says analyst Simon Molica.

Daniel Nickols assumed sole responsibility for the  Gold-rated fund in Jan 2004, but his involvement with it dates back even further to 2001 when he worked alongside Ashton Bradbury. Nickols heads up the UK Mid & Small Cap team and is able to draw upon the resources of the wider UK equity team.

Artemis UK Smaller Companies

Artemis UK Smaller Companies continues to exhibit its high quality, says analyst Chetan Modi.

A major attraction of this  Gold-rated fund is the expertise of manager Mark Niznik; he began his career in 1985 and the majority of his experience has been focused on small-cap companies. In the early part of 2011 he assumed sole responsibility here; previously Niznik had comanaged the fund alongside John Dodd since Oct 2007.
