'Multi-asset portfolios' are the latest buzzwords in the investment world. These portfolios seek to offer lower volatility compared to standard equity funds, by combining asset classes so as to make for a smoother ride, at the cost of smoother returns.

Investment trusts are among the tools available to investors looking to build a multi-asset portfolio, but the closed-end fund structure oftens means such a portfolio can be compiled at a lower cost and with less complexity.

Last month's investment trust webinar, aimed at financial professionals, explored how investors might go about building or enhancing a multi-asset portfolio with investment trusts.

Topics covered included, what types of assets are available? How can investors judge correlation? Where can they find true diversity? How can investors blend open-end and closed-end funds to ensure diversification?

All these questions and more were addressed by the panel of investment trust experts:

- Olivia Mayell, JP Morgan Asset Management
- Nick Greenwood, MAM Funds
- Richard Kirby, F&C Investments

The webinar was chaired by David Harris of InvaTrust.
